Groundhopping
Watching football at different grounds can offer unique insights into the culture of the respective clubs and their communities.
Travelling the world - as a fan, writer, researcher and filmmaker - has taken me to 175 countries, watching football in 303 professional grounds.
This includes (almost) every club in English football - and 25 mega-events, notably the last six World Cups.
‘The 91 Club’
England has the largest national network of professional football clubs in the world. The 92 Club is an exclusive membership organisation for fans who have visited all 92 League football grounds in England - that is every ground from the Premier League, Championship, League 1 and League 2.
During the data collection phase of my PhD in football fandom with the Football Industries Group at the University of Liverpool (2003-2007), I watched a match in every English league ground - except one: Hillsborough.
Liverpool have not played at Sheffield Wednesday since 1999, a match that many away fans chose to boycott in connection to the 1989 Hillsborough disaster, in which 97 supporters died.
Deciding not to complete the English groundhopping set on principle, I may be the only member of a similar yet distinct alternative: ‘The 91 Club’.
With promotions and relegations, 113 clubs have played in England’s top four divisions this century. Adding a new ground every time a different club is promoted to League 2 - most recently Harrogate Town in 2021 - this is my collection of 112 ticket stubs.
